When Knowing Everything Means Choosing Love | Arrival & the Navigating Five

In this episode of The Enneagram in a Movie podcast, Mario Sikora and TJ Dawe explore the Navigating Five through the 2016 movie, Arrival, starring Amy Adams. Adams plays Louise Banks, a linguist brought in to communicate with the extraterrestrials that have arrived around the globe. Mario and TJ explore the hypersensitivity and tenderness found in Fives as they are Striving to Feel Detached, which can cause them to create an emotional buffer between themselves and the world. Louise demonstrates this as she tries to make a connection with the arrivals, despite knowing how the journey ends.

“It’s about understanding the group. It’s about understanding the other. It’s about making sense of people and the way they are in the world. And observing, listening, probing, all of these things, and this whole movie is about that.” - Mario [28:06]

“Her being an expert on languages and communications and being able to apply it is a brilliant analogy for navigating in the first place. Of like here’s an expert who gets brought in to decipher obscure messages for the government or to communicate this to students who want to learn about why Portuguese is different than other romance languages and such. It’s very much like ‘I know how to go from group to group, and I will take you there with me if you want.’” - TJ [31:03]
